The Mother of Exiles is my response to the deplorable way immigrants and Americans have been treated in recent past. My family’s name is engraved on the American Immigrant Wall of Honor at Ellis Island, and my Polish ancestry is a source of pride. I sewed the entire sonnet that is engraved on a plaque inside the Statue of Liberty into the background of this piece. “The New Colossus” was written by Emma Lazarus in 1883 and honors the statue as a symbol of welcome for immigrants. I hope that someday our country will once again be a refuge for the tempest-tost and my statue will no longer have reason to weep.
